Oldham Athletic AFC began as Pine Villa FC in 1895, and played in the Manchester and Lancashire leagues. When rivals Oldham County FC folded in 1899, Pine Villa moved into their stadium and changed their name to Oldham Athletic. The now professional club entered the Football League in 1907-08 and gained promotion to the First Division after three years. Oldham were runners-up in the First Division in 1914-15, having reached the FA Cup semi-finals two seasons earlier. The club was relegated in 1923 and again in 1935 to Third Division North. Oldham defeated Chester 11-2 in January 1952, a scoring record that stands to this day. The club finally returned to the First Division in 1991 after a 68-year gap. Oldham became founder members of the Premier League a year later, but were relegated in 1994.

Oldham are nicknamed Latics and managed by Richie Wellens (appointed October 2017). The club play at Boundary Park, their home since 1899. Oldham finished 17th at the end of the 2016-17 League One season.

Pompey and Oldham have met on thirty-six occasions, the first meeting coming in December 1924 when the sides drew 2-2. The sides have met three times in the League Cup, Pompey winning twice and Oldham once. In the thirty-three League meetings, Pompey have won nine times and Oldham fifteen, with nine games drawn. The last League meeting came in September at Fratton Park, when Oldham won 2-1.
