Milton Keynes Dons was founded in 2004 after the controversial relocation of Wimbledon FC from London in September 2003. Former owner Ron Noades had considered merging Wimbledon with Milton Keynes City but ended up abandoning the idea. In 2000, a business consortium proposed a Football League standard stadium as part of a proposed retail development in Milton Keynes and, in August 2001, Wimbledon's new chairman announced that the club was to relocate there. The Football League refused permission, but a three-man independent commission eventually ruled in the club's favour. Disaffected Wimbledon fans reacted by forming their own club AFC Wimbledon in June 2002. After avoiding liquidation, the original Wimbledon finally moved to their new location in September 2003 and were originally based at the National Hockey Stadium. The Inter MK Group bought the club out of administration in June 2004 and renamed the club Milton Keynes Dons Football Club. The club began in League One and recorded its most famous victory in the 2014-15 season when they defeated Manchester United 4-0 in the League Cup.

MK Dons moved to their present home, Stadium mk, in 2007. They are nicknamed The Dons and managed by Russell Martin (appointed November 2019). The Dons finished 3rd in League Two at the end of the 2018-19 season and were promoted.

Pompey and MK Dons have met five times and Pompey have won two games and MK one game, with the other two ending as draws. The last meeting was in December 2019 at Stadium mk, when MK won 3-1.
