Blackburn Rovers was founded in 1875 and became a founder member of the Football League in 1888. It is one of only three clubs to also be a founder member of the Premier League. Rovers moved to their present home, Ewood Park, in 1890. They have won the League title three times, the FA Cup six times, the League Cup once and are the only extant club to have won three consecutive FA Cups.

Blackburn played their first game on 18th December 1875 and was one of twenty-three clubs that formed the Lancashire FA in September 1878. The club reached its first FA Cup final in 1882 but lost 1-0 to Old Etonians. They won the trophy two years later when they defeated Scottish club Queen's Park and repeated the success twelve months later. In 1886 they won for a third consecutive time, defeating West Bromwich Albion in a replay, and were presented with a silver shield. Rovers' fourth FA Cup success came in 1890 when they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 6-1. The following year saw their fifth success, this time against Notts County. The club won the First Division title in 1911-12 and 1913-14 and their sixth FA Cup in 1928, defeating Huddersfield Town in the final. Blackburn were relegated in 1948 and this was when the tradition of burying a coffin began:

In 1960 Rovers reached the FA Cup final again, but lost to Wolves, and won the short-lived Full Members' Cup in 1987. Jack Walker took over the club in 1991 and his investment helped bring promotion to the Premier League a year later. Rovers won the Premier League in 1995. Jack Walker died in 2000, and the club now has a stand named in his memory. They won the League Cup in 2002, defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the final. Rovers were relegated to League One in May 2017, the first Premier League champions to sink to the third tier of English football.

Rovers are managed by Tony Mowbray and have the motto "Arte et Labore" (By Skill and Hard Work).

Pompey and Blackburn have played on eighty-nine occasions. In the FA Cup, Blackburn has won five times, Pompey twice and six games were drawn. Blackburn has won four of the five League Cup meetings, with the other game drawn. Of the seventy-one League meetings, Blackburn has won thirty, Pompey twenty-four and seventeen have ended as draws. The first meeting was in January 1900 in the FA Cup (0-0) and the last meeting was in October 2017 at Ewood Park when Blackburn won 3-0.
