Maidenhead FC was founded in October 1870 and they were one of the fifteen clubs to play in the inaugural FA Cup competition in 1871-72. They became founder members of the Southern League in 1894, subsequently dropping into the West Berkshire League and the Berks and Bucks League. Maidenhead joined the Great Western Suburban League in 1904 alongside Maidenhead Norfolkians. The two clubs merged in April 1919 and Maidenhead's colours changed to black and white. The club became Maidenhead United in 1920, and joined Division One of the Spartan League in 1922. In 1935-36, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup before losing to Ilford. After World War Two ended, the club joined the newly formed Corinthian League. Maidenhead reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1960-61 and again two years later. The club became members of the Premier Division of the Athenian League in 1963 and made two further FA Cup appearances (1963 & 1971). Maidenhead joined Division Two of the Isthmian League in 1973 and won the League's Full Members Cup in 1997. They were promoted to the Conference South in 2004 but relegated the following season. In 2006-07, they reached the FA Cup first round for the first time since the 1970s and won promotion back to the Conference South. They have since made four further FA Cup first round appearances. Maidenhead won promotion to the National League in 2017.

Maidenhead have played at their York Road ground since February 1871, making it "the oldest senior football ground continuously used by the same club".

Maidenhead's nickname is The Magpies, and they are managed by former West Ham and England player Alan Devonshire. Ryan Bird, a former Pompey striker, now plays for Maidenhead. The club finished 12th in the National League in 2017-18.

Pompey and Maidenhead met in the FA Cup first round on 10 November 2018, with Pompey winning 4-0 at York Road.
