Harrogate Town AFC was founded in 1914 as Harrogate AFC. The club entered the Northern League, but fixtures were postponed due to the outbreak of the First World War. After the war ended, the club entered the West Riding League. In the 1920-21 season, Harrogate became a founding member of the Yorkshire League. The club then joined the Midland Football League and fielded a reserve side in the Yorkshire League; however, they resigned from the Midland League after one season and reverted to fielding a first team in the Yorkshire League. Harrogate became Yorkshire League champions in 1927 and moved to the Northern League, but the team disbanded in 1932. The club was brought back in 1935 as Harrogate Hotspurs, but after the Second World War was renamed Harrogate Town and entered the West Yorkshire League. Harrogate rejoined the Yorkshire League in 1957 and became a founding member of the Northern Counties East Football League in 1982. In 1987-88, the club became founding members of the Northern Premier League First Division and in 1990 became a limited company. In 2004, Harrogate became founding members of the newly formed Conference North. The club's best run in the FA Cup came in the 2012-13 season when they reached the second round, losing to Hastings United after a replay. Harrogate became a full-time club in 2017 and won promotion to the National League in May 2018.

Harrogate, nicknamed Town or The Sulphurites, play at Wetherby Road and are managed by Simon Weaver. They finished 6th in the National League at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Pompey and Harrogate Town met for the first time in the FA Cup first round on 11th November 2019. The match was won 2-1 by Pompey after going behind to an early goal.
